It’s boxing for Africa, live on SuperSport
SuperSport Select (Channel 233)
Paulus Ambunda, one of Namibia’s most
celebrated boxers, will make the first defence of his IBO super-bantamweight
title against Australia’s Jason Cooper in Windhoek on Saturday.
In another first, SuperSport will
broadcast the tournament live from Namibia in line with its commitment to
developing sport across the continent (Select, ch 233, from 6.30pm and
Select/SelectGO Channel 30 from 7pm).
Ambunda is a former WBO bantamweight
title holder who remains strongly in the mix in the division thanks to his
outstanding record – 23 wins in 24 fights – and his defeats of top boxers like
Tomoki Kameda, Tshifhiwa Munyai and Pungluang Sor Singyu.
Just the third Namibian to win a world
title, Ambunda faces the rugged Cooper who hails from the evocatively named
Deception Bay in Queensland. Little is known about Cooper, but if he is
anything like the slew of Australians who have fought in southern Africa in
recent years, he will give the Namibian all the trouble he can handle.
A former cattle herder, Ambunda is the
star turn on a tournament that includes a number of excellent local bouts.
In the chief undercard fight, Sacky
Shikukutu will contest the IBO Africa welterweight title against countryman
Bethuel Ushona, who holds wins over former world champions Isaac Hlatshwayo and
Kaizer Mabuza and most recently beat former SA-based Bongo Lipembo.
The WBO International bantamweight title
will be on the line when one-time world title challenger Immanuel Naidjale
meets South Africa’s Toto Helebe.
Other fighters featured on Saturday
include Wilbeforce Shihepo, Japhet Uutoni and Jeremiah Nakathila.
