Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen

I stand here tonight humbled, yet grateful for the trust bestowed upon me to be the Chairperson of MultiChoice Namibia.

When Oprah Winfrey was a small girl, working with her barbershop-owner dad, she would see all kinds of people joining them. At one Christmas dinner she asked her Dad:

Daddy, why can’t we have regular people at our Christmas dinner?

His response was: They are regular people. They are just like you. They want the same things you want.

MultiChoice Namibia has realized that we are all regular people. MNC gives the opportunity to the regular people to hear and be heard, to share their stories and allow others to see themselves for a moment and gives them a glimpse to triumph.

This glimpse of triumph started in December 1992, when the joint venture with Kalahari Holdings was the beginning of a new era. MCN used the power of entertainment to enrich the lives and become part of the integral part of the entertainment industry, education and positive contribution towards economic growth and job creation in Namibia.

MultiChoice Namibia believes that, and if I may quote Maya Angelou “When you learn, teach. When you get, give.” MCN has invested in infrastructure, technology and most importantly in people. To date, MCN has done a direct economic impact of some USD11.9 each year on our contribution to our communities.

We have forged long-term relationships with the National Broadcaster, Government, Ministry of Education, and entrepreneurs.

Our national footprints extend across the country, with two offices in Windhoek, branches in Swakopmund and Ongwediva. We are currently exploring Kavango Region. We currently support 13 agents, 120 accredited installer companies and a robust network of 70 Namibian retailers countrywide.

Martin Luther Junior once said: “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

True to this quote, MultiChoice improves Namibian lives to make a difference in their communities by equipping them with additional skills, financial assistance and education training by making learning available to educational institutions. To date 300 Namibian schools are beneficiaries of the MultiChoice Resource Centre programmes through which schools receive a plasma screen and PVR decoder with educational programmes, at no cost.

DStv and GOtv content inspires Namibians to make their entertainment time the most life-enriching experience it could be. As a result, we see children in rural areas who have been watching DStv, speak English. You see them imitating famous soccer players on TV when they are playing soccer.

Personally, I always wanted to be involved in areas where I can add value. MultiChoice has opened up this opportunity, and my favourite memories are when we are giving donations. Seeing children, babies and communities benefitting certainly enriches my life.

All these memories, along the journey of enriching lives, made MultiChoice the broadcaster that it is today.

Your Excellency, ladies and gentlemen, as MultiChoice we are not oblivious of the challenges facing our local content industry, in fact, we are committed to ensure that MultiChoice Namibia contributes towards the development of local content. However, I must hasten to mention that a collective responsibility by the government, national broadcaster, and the Namibian film industry on the forefront, can realise that goal. As MultiChoice Namiba we are willing to be part of the bigger picture, but are also faced with the challenges. I see my brother, Festus Mbandeka here tonight. This is the most powerful person in our industry. Since I am having some power on this podium for now, may I appeal to you to be cognizant of the challenges we are facing as an industry. From that perspective, I will also appeal to my other brother, Hon. Simataa to assist the firm industry to improve on our local content industry. My powers are only applicable while I am on the podium and that is why I am abusing the opportunity.

MultiChoice Namibaia ralises that the world is changing and therefore we are in the business of WE CAN, WE DID IT AND WE SHALL BE DOING IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.
